Maui Jim started back in the early 1980’s as a small company selling sunglasses on the beaches of Maui. They realized that a new kind of protective eyewear had to be developed to combat the Hawaiian sun’s extreme glare and harmful UV rays.
It took a while, but eventually the Maui Jim team had their big “Aia ho’i!” (Ta-Da! in Hawaiian) The original line of sunglasses featured only seven styles but they all had the new PolarizedPlus technology developed by the original Maui Jim team. This new PolarizedPlus was so unique it was quickly patented, and the legend of Maui Jim was begun.
Named after the town of Makaha on the west coast of Oahu (which is also known as one of the best big wave surfing sites with waves reaching 25 feet high!), Maui Jim Makaha Polarized sunglasses are now part of their MJ Sport-Polycarbonate Maui Evolution series. The word “makaha” means fierce in Hawaiian and that is exactly what the design of these sunglasses is.
The sturdy but flexible Grilamid hingeless frame gives these rectangular wrap sunglasses incredible strength and durability and the polycarbonate lenses provide the optimum in UV protection. The unisex design of the Maui Jim Makaha frame looks best on round or oval faces.
Maui Jim knows just how active their customers are, so all lenses are coated on both sides with CLEARSHELL scratch coating to give them added protection. These fierce looking frames and lenses come in the following color combinations: gloss black frame with gray lenses, tortoise frame with HCL bronze lenses or tortoise frames with Maui rose lenses.
